Eisteddfod Competitions

Cwrs Cymru Deg Eisteddfod Topic

Those planning to come won't want to miss participating in the Cwrs Eisteddfod, a literary competition in Welsh that includes all levels of learners. For those who choose to submit an entry, their efforts are recognized at a ceremony on Friday night of the course week. Eisteddfod topics for levels 1 through 5 are announced at the start of the week; however, to give participants more time to compose, the topic for levels 6 and 7 is announced early. The winning bard at levels 6 and 7 receives the Cymdeithas Madog chair, a beautifully wrought miniature version of the official chair for the 1989 Llanrwst National Eisteddfod. http://www.madog.org/dysgwyr/barddoniaeth/hanes.html

For students in the upper-level classes--level 6 or 7--this year's topic is "Perthyn." You may interpret or apply the topic in any way you wish. Your entry may be prose or poetry, but it must be a piece of original writing of a minimum of 350 words. You may use any written materials you like (dictionaries, grammars etc.) but you may not consult any living Welsh speaker for assistance with your entry.

Compete in the National Eisteddfod, Ebbw Vale, 2010

Yes! You, the reader! And why not? There is a section especially for adult learners, and I urge you to consider competing in the section that is most appropriate for you. Click on the following website and you will be able to read all the rules and regulations in addition to competition titles. Have a go! Wouldn’t it be fantastic if one of our very own won a prize at the National? If you have queries, contact the Cymdeithas Madog Board and someone will be able to help you.

The Learners’ section is on pages 51,52 and 53. Go for it, and good luck!

First Annual Ninnau & Y Drych Eisteddfod by Mail

The National Festival of Wales (NAFOW) in Portland, Oregon, Sept. 2-5, 2010, will also include its own Eisteddfod competition. This year, however, there is a new competition, with a new way to enter: The Eisteddfod by Mail, originally launched by Welsh-American newspaper Y Drych some 20 years ago and hosted by them for a decade, is returning as the First Annual Ninnau & Y Drych Eisteddfod by Mail.

There are three music competitions, a history competition, and five literature competitions. Each offers a cash prize. All entries will be adjudicated in Wales. Most entries are in English; a few offer a Welsh-language option if the entrant chooses. All entries are due in Minnesota, USA, June 1, 2010.
