Do other organizations and societies award scholarships for attendance at Cwrs Cymraeg?

Yes. Cymdeithas Madog participates in a matching scholarship program with many local Welsh societies and other organizations. We will match the scholarship contribution of local Welsh groups, educational institutions, or other non-profit organizations up to a determined amount. Contact your local Welsh society, school, or organization to see if it is willing to cooperate with Cymdeithas Madog to fund a scholarship.

What is the closing date for submitting a scholarship application?

The deadline for submitting a scholarship application and letter of recommendation is April 1, 2019.

Does submission of a scholarship application reserve a place for me on the course?

No. To reserve a place, you must register for Cwrs Cymraeg and send the required deposit to the Cwrs Cymraeg Registrar, either by mail or through online payment. Only after students have registered for the course and have submitted a deposit are they eligible to be considered for a scholarship.

Is my deposit refundable if I am not awarded a scholarship?

Yes. If you are not awarded a scholarship and cannot afford to attend otherwise, you may request a full refund of your deposit within 30 days after the offer is made.

Please notify the scholarship chair of your decision to accept or not accept a scholarship offer within 2 weeks of the offer.

If for any reason you cannot come to the cwrs after accepting an offer, please notify the scholarship chair immediately.

Your deposit will not be refunded after you accept a scholarship.

Do I need a letter of recommendation?

Yes. For your scholarship application to be considered complete, a person who knows of your interest in the Welsh language must write a letter of recommendation on your behavlf and send it directly to the Scholarship Coordinator, postmarked prior to the application closing date. If you are applying for a matching scholarship, your sponsor must send a letter directly to the Scholarship Coordinator confirming the amount of money to be pledged for you.

Who could write a letter of recommendation?

The writer should know of your interest in Welsh. Typically, letters in the past have come from teachers, clergy, and fellow members of local Welsh societies. Relatives have written also, but this should be a last resort.

Does Cymdeithas Madog give scholarships for research, travel to Wales, or any other activity besides attending the weeklong intensive Cwrs Cymraeg?

No. Although we may think other projects are worthy, we have funds to support study on our course only. We cannot fund any other projects or study on any other Welsh course.

How does Cymdeithas Madog fund its scholarships?

Funding for the Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Program comes from various sources, including grants provided by the National Welsh American Foundation, contributions by local Welsh societies and private donors, and from Cymdeithas Madog itself. Cymdeithas Madog established a Scholarship Endowment Fund to increase its ability to award scholarships. Please visit our Friends of Madog page to learn more about the Scholarship Endowment Fund.
