Due to the generosity of a number of Welsh associations and private individuals, Cymdeithas Madog is able to offer scholarships to help students attend the annual Cwrs Cymraeg Welsh language week. Here are some of the frequently asked questions that we hear about scholarships.

Y Lythyren 'Q'/The Letter 'Q'What scholarships are available for Cwrs Cymraeg 2008?


Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'

  1. The Naomi Mergenthal Memorial ScholarshipScholarship is awarded annually to a promising student of Welsh language who is 22 years of age or younger. The scholarship covers full tuition, including a shared room and board, at the residential rate. Travel costs and optional extra expenses are not covered. Students who have not previously received the Mergenthal scholarship may apply.
  2. Cymdeithas Madog also awards several partial scholarships annually, the amount of each scholarship depending on the number of applicants and the amount of funds available each year.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'Yes. Cymdeithas Madog participates in a matching scholarship program with many local Welsh societies and other organizations. We will match the scholarship contribution of local Welsh groups, educational institutions, or other non-profit organizations up to a determined amount. Contact your local Welsh society, school, or organization to see if it is willing to cooperate with Cymdeithas Madog to fund a scholarship.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'The last date to accept scholarship applications for Cwrs Cymraeg y Rhosyn Gwyllt was April 21, 2008. We are no longer accepting applications for 2008.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'It should be postmarked by April 21, 2008.

Y Llythyren 'Q'/The Letter 'Q'Does submission of a scholarship application reserve a place for me on the course?


Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'No. To reserve a place, you must register for Cwrs Cymraeg 2008 and send the required deposit of $100.00 (US) to the Cwrs Cymraeg Registrar. Only after students have registered for the course and have submitted a deposit are they eligible to be considered for a scholarship.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'Yes. If you are not awarded a scholarship and cannot afford to attend otherwise, your course deposit will be refunded in full.

Y Llythyren 'Q'Do I need a letter of recommendation?


Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'Yes. For your scholarship application to be considered complete, a person who knows of your interest in the Welsh language must write a letter of recommendation on your behalf and send it directly to the Scholarship Coordinator, postmarked by April 21, 2008. If you are applying for a matching scholarship, your sponsor must send a letter directly to the Scholarship Coordinator confirming the amount of money to be pledged for you.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'The writer should know of your interest in Welsh. Typically, letters in the past have come from teachers, clergy, and fellow members of local Welsh societies. Relatives have written also, but this should be a last resort.

Y Lythyren 'Q'/The Letter 'Q'Does Cymdeithas Madog give scholarships for research, travel to Wales, or any other activity besides attending the weeklong intensive Cwrs Cymraeg?


Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'No. Although we may think other projects are worthy, we have funds to support study on our course only. We cannot fund any other projects or study on any other Welsh course.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'Funding for the Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Program comes from various sources, including grants provided by the National Welsh American Foundation and the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association,
contributions by local Welsh societies and private donors, and from Cymdeithas Madog itself. Cymdeithas Madog has established a Scholarship Endowment Fund to increase its ability to award scholarships.

Y Llythyren 'A'/The Letter 'A'Many students request assistance with the tuition to attend Cwrs Cymraeg. Your donation can help another student explore the Welsh language. Donations to the Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Endowment Fund are tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers.
